One day in Mykonos

Mykonos is mostly famous for its idyllic town and the fabulous night life. It is hard not to fall in love with the beautiful town and its many small walking streets with the lovely white houses with blue doors and the beautiful red and pink bougainvillea flowers everywhere. You can stroll around the town for days to see every corner of it and you’ll still be amazed.

The mesmerazing beauty of the Mykonos Town attracts many tourists that overflow the streets every summer. If you ask me this was a downer for this island, but you can catch some empty spots here and there, specially at noon. In this Mykonos travel guide, we will tell you everything you need to know about Mykonos and how to make your visit extra special.

I’ve been twice to Mykonos and I have never stayed more than one day, but maybe two full days in Mykonos are a better option, to take advantage of all that the island has to offer.

The peak tourist season in Mykonos is between June and Labor Day (the first weekend of September). This is when restaurants and resorts will be the most crowded and expensive. If you want less crowds and lower prices, you should go to Mykonos in May or very early in the season or into the middle of September.

If you ask me, I think the most enjoyable time to visit Greece is in September because the weather is still very warm, but the summer crowds have disappeared. I’ve been to Greece in September 3 years ago and we had warm weather and a good time. However, keep in mind that the winds in Greece begin to pick up toward the end of the month!

You know you are in Greece if there are cats even in restaurants

CHORA TOWN

This is one of the postcard spots in Mykonos and with good reason. It is incredibly beautiful, probably the most beautiful “old town” in the Cycladic Islands. It is like a big labyrinth designed to confuse visitors with the endless laneways that seemingly twist and turn in every direction.

If you don´t want to get to lost, or ending seeing the same spots over and over, maybe you should start your explorations in Little Venice and working your way north towards Mykonos oldest church, Panagia Paraportiani. Follow the laneways towards the old port, before re-entering the laneways and winding your way towards the popular Matogianni St and the Alefkándhra district, which is packed with art galleries and the famous lovely Greek bars.

Ice cream and coffee tastes better when travelling in Greece

Greek food is delicious and healthy and cooked with lots of love. This means that any restaurant you chose to eat, the food will be delicious. I’ve been to Mykonos twice and I always tried new restaurants, not because the ones I’ve eaten before were bad, but because everything looks delicious everywhere. Here are a few I loved:

  • Caesar’s
  • D’Angelo Mykonos
  • Kastro´s Restaurant
  • Kiki´s Tavern
  • The taste Diaries
Beautiful spots all over the town

It’s pure bliss wondering along the cobblestone streets of Mykonos while being greeted by whitewashed archtiecture, cubic shaped houses, charming cafes, elegant rooftop bars and shops lining the streets. But do not forget to bring comfortable shoes, because you’ll end up exploring for hours and the streets are not heels friendly.

Cats are everywhere in the Greek islands

The wind blows all around the year on the Greek island of Mykonos witch makes it quite logical that on Mykonos you can find one of the most famous landmarks of Greece. This is a postcard place in Greece and most famous spot in Mykonos. Once you’ll get there you will quickly understand why this spot is so famous and why are so many photos on the Internet with the windmills.

Mykonos is well known for the windmills, sunset in Venice and the cute white and blue houses. But there are more than 50 beautiful beaches you can visit to choose from. The beaches here are gorgeous. Paranga, Paradise and Super Paradise are the most popular beaches in Mykonos, but is depending on what you prefer and what type of beach you want to spend your day to. The island is very small, meaning you can visit various beaches in one day.

  • Megali Ammos
  • Agios Ioannis
  • Ornos
  • Paradise
  • Elia
  • Kalafatis
  • Super Paradise
Little shops all over the town

Around sunset, Little Venice is one of the most idyllic spots. It is prefect for a romantic diner with your loved one, also it is a good photo opportunity, because trust me the sunset is absolutely amazing. There are many bars and good spots all around the town with great views at the sunset, but we chose Little Venice.

Mykonos night life

Moving further into the night, you can’t get more fun than after the sun goes down. To be honest I’ve seen more people at night than in the day time. It is something about the night life in Mykonos, Everybody is out, families with children, couples, party friends, cats. There is something for everybody at night. Talking about safety, I haven’t felt unsafe not even one moment. The streets are loaded with people making it hard for something bad to happen. This time I was with my boyfriend, but my first time in Mykonos I’ve been by myself and I felt safe. The only thing you have to worry about it is to have as much fun as possible.

I hope you found this Mykonos travel guide useful and maybe I’ve helped you to plant better your trip to this wonderful island. Mykonos is a beautiful destination, whether you go with friends, family or partner there are activities for everybody. Mykonos will be a memorable experience that you won’t soon forget and one of the best places to enjoy summers days.
