Snorkelling is an amazing experience, I mean who could possible not like the colourful, amazing life that hides under the water, the peace, the instant relaxation.. what a bliss. Mauritius is regarded as the ultimate tropical destination for adventurers, underwater enthusiasts, romantic getaway and also a family friendly. There are a million reasons to visit the island, there’s so much to do and see. And if you are a snorkelling or diving enthusiast, this is the right place to go.
TURTLES, TURTLES AND MORE TURTLES..
The turquoise water in here is absolutely breathtaking, one of the best I’ve ever seen and there you add the backdrop of palm trees with a few cute restaurants, that amplifies the scenery even more. So if you decide to snorkel in Mauritius you should book a tour at least one day before, because it fills really fast and you might be left without living such an amazing experience.
A very popular tour in Mauritius is swimming with turtles. This is a definite highlight for a trip to Mauritius. You’ll go not to far from the shore, good for the ones who are afraid of water or have sea sickness, where you can put a life vest (if you are not a good swimmer) and you’ll be immediately greeted by lots of friendly turtles that will bump straight into you. Put your head below water to watch the corals, along with tropical fish and you can even spot a few trumpetfish.. super cool! If you sit very still, you’ll get very close interactions with all of these beautiful marine creatures!

stunning colourful reef
Many of us already know the high importance of the reefs around the globe, but also the huge problem we are facing, with them dying, because of the climate change. The reef plays a huge role in protecting the island, since its extensive size creates a lagoon that surrounds much of the island, protecting it from the sea and causing the crystal clear blue waters we all enjoy in Mauritius.
Today, the island is trying to protect the coastal waters and the stunning reefs that encircle them, to ensure future generations can enjoy the spectacular marine life and the raw beauty of the Indian Ocean.

HERE ARE 4 PLACES WHERE YOU CAN GET TO INTERACT WITH THE ASTONISHING MARINE LIFE IN MAURITIUS
- Blue Bay Marine Park, it is considered to be one of the most amazing places to snorkel in Mauritius where you’ll get to swim in a fabulous lagoon, teeming with marine life with plenty of fish and coral
- Pointe aux Piments, one of the biggest draws to snorkelling around the shallow reefs where there’s a huge chance to swim with turtles in their natural habitat
- Ile aux Cerfs, a sandy little island that rises out of the tranquil lagoons. Here the water is calm and shallow with plenty of wildlife in the lagoon and colourful fish, large fish, such as snappers and grouper
- Flic en Flac is a long, sandy beach and also one of the most famous for snorkelling spots as the waters are calm and the surrounding reefs are home to brightly coloured tropical fish, such as the blue tarred parrotfish and you can even get the opportunity to see dolphins playing out at sea

BEST SEASON FOR SNORKELLING
Mauritius enjoys a tropical climate all year round marking it perfect to visit at any season. But still, there is a better time of the year when you can enjoy snorkelling. The best months to go snorkelling in Mauritius are considered to be in the warm summer months of October to December when the warm and nutrient rich water attracts fish in droves.
After the warmth of summer in Mauritius, the tropical air collides with the cooler air of the approaching winter which can cause a risk of cyclones during the months of January and February, which is when we visited and yes we catch a huge cyclone, but as you can see we still could do snorkelling, even tough we could have done it every day. But I only wanted to spend my birthday in this paradise, making it the best birthday present, so I can’t complain.
The winter in Mauritius is warm and dry even though the winds can pick up, especially in the southern part of the island, during this time snorkeling can be enjoyed but expect to see less variety of fish during this season. The best time of day to go snorkelling in Mauritius is early in the morning before the majority of tourists reach the beaches.
